One of the most common questions we get is how to clean up a liquid spill. Here are some tips for cleaning up the spill yourself which works well for all liquid spills, whether coffee, tea, soda, wine, or juice.
Start by absorbing or extracting as much of the liquid as possible either with a wet/dry vacuum, spot cleaning machine, folded white towel or several layers of paper towels. If using a machine, it's still good to use the towels to get as much moisture out as possible. Blot or extract as much as possible then place the towels (disposable diapers work well too) over the spot and put a weight on it, ie exercise weights, books, bowling ball, you get the idea. Leave the towels and weight in place for several hours, replace the towels and let set again. Continue the process until the towels are no longer wet when you pull them up. The way this works is through capillary action, as the fibers dry it pulls more moisture up from underneath. The process continues until either the towels reach saturation point or there is no more liquid left in lower layers. If you still have a colored spot after the carpet is dry, dampen the spot with hydrogen peroxide, then apply an equal amount of household ammonia or carpet cleaning spotter. Cover it with a piece of plastic wrap so it stays damp and leave it for a day. The hydrogen peroxide and ammonia or spotter create a mild bleach that may take out the color. Don't saturate the carpet so much that it will soak down into the pad. This mild bleach solution is safe for most carpets but is not for use on wool carpets as it may bleach the color out.
